Who will be crowned King at the 102nd NCBA Kenya Amateur Match Play Championship at Windsor?

Michael Karanga, Adel Balala, John Lejirma and Elvis Muigua.

Seventy-eight (78) golfers from Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, the UK, India, and South Africa will compete in the 102nd NCBA Kenya Amateur Match Play Championship at Windsor Golf and Country Club.

The four-day tournament is scheduled for July 11-14.

The defending champion, Michael Karanga, who is currently at position three in the Kenya Amateur Golf Championship (KAGC) series with 264.9 points, will be facing tough competition from other top amateur golfers from Kenya and beyond.

I’m focused on retaining the Kenya Amateurs Matchplay Championship title at Windsor this coming weekend so that I can get a direct slot in Kenya Open 2025,” he said.

Last weekend, Karanga of Kiambu Golf Club won the NCBA Limuru Open at Limuru County Club, also known as “Little Augusta.”

NCBA Limuru Open is Karanga’s second title in the 2024 KAGC series, after participating in five tournaments this season.

He previously won the NCBA Coronation Cup in Nakuru on May 31.

The Kenya Amateur Match Play championship will follow a rigorous format starting with stroke play on day one, played over 36 holes, where all participants will battle for a spot in the subsequent Match Play rounds.

The Championship is exclusively open to male participants this year, and therefore, female competitors will not be taking part in this weekend’s tournament.

Players to watch this weekend include; John Lejirma (Kenya Railways), Elvis Muigua (Kiambi Golf Club), Adel Balala (Nyali Golf Club), and Isaac Makokha of Kenya Railways.

Kenya Golf Union Tournament Director Chris Kinuthia said they are immensely grateful to NCBA for their steadfast support in providing a platform where elite amateurs can thrive and potentially earn a livelihood.

“Additionally, we extend our heartfelt appreciation to Windsor Golf and Country Club for graciously hosting this prestigious event over the next four days,” he said.

Next weekend, the Vetlab Sports Club will host the Kabete Open (July 19 – 21), whereas the Mombasa Golf Club will host the Coast Open “Barry Cup” from July 26-28.

Nyali Golf and Country Club will host the Kenya Amateur Strokeplay Championship from August 1-4.

Karanga is also the defending champion of the Kenya Amateurs Matchplay Championship, the Coast Open Barry Cup, and the Kenya Amateur Strokeplay Championship.
