Kenya’s elite amateur golfers John Lejirma, Elvis Muigua, Josphat Rono, and junior player Krish Beiju are in Zimbabwe for the All Africa Golf Team Championship (AAGTC).

Rono stepped in for Adel Balala, who withdrew just days before departure.

The biennial championship, hosted at Zimbabwe’s oldest golf course, Bulawayo Golf Club—established in 1895—tees off Tuesday morning and runs through Friday.

Team Kenya arrived in Zimbabwe on Sunday and spent Monday familiarizing themselves with the 18-hole, par-72 Bulawayo championship course.

Team Kenya captain John Lejirma expressed optimism about their readiness for the continental event.

“We arrived safely, and the course familiarization went well. It’s challenging, especially in the rough, but it’s a gettable course, and we’re ready for the competition,” Lejirma told Golf Score Kenya.

The tournament has attracted teams from 15 countries, including host Zimbabwe, Kenya, Morocco, Mauritius, Zambia, Egypt, Gabon, Uganda, Eswatini, Botswana, South Africa, and Malawi.

Morocco is the defending champion, having won the 2022 competition in Egypt.

First held in 2001, the All Africa Golf Team Championship is regarded as one of the continent’s most prestigious amateur team events and is endorsed by both the R&A and the Africa Golf Confederation.

Kenya aims to claim the All Africa Golf Team Championship title, building on their recent victory at the 2024 Africa Region IV Golf Championship in Rwanda, which they won for the third consecutive year.

The three-day, 96-hole tournament took place at Kigali Golf Resort and Villas.
