Kenya’s team of talented lady golfers has arrived in Morocco to compete in the 16th edition of the All Africa Challenge Trophy (AACT).
The 2024 AACT, Africa’s premier women’s golf competition, will take place at the Tazegzout Golf Club in Agadir, Morocco from Wednesday, November 27, to Sunday, November 30, 2024.
The AACT is a biennial continental women’s golf championship that debuted in 1992. The first edition was organized by the Zimbabwe Ladies Golf Union at Chapman Golf Club in Harare.
This year’s tournament has drawn participants from 21 countries, including South Africa, Angola, Ghana, Egypt, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Tunisia, Kenya, Botswana, Côte d’Ivoire, and Namibia, among others.
Each country fields a team of three players, competing under the Eisenhower scoring system, where the best two scores per round contribute to the daily team score in the 54-hole stroke play format.
Last month, Kenya unveiled its three-member squad: Captain Naomi Wafula of Vipingo Ridge Golf Club, Mercy Nyanchama of Golf Park, and junior golfer Bianca Ngecu of Muthaiga Golf Club.
The reserves are Margaret Njoki of Golf Park and Ashley Awuor from Royal Nairobi.
The team is managed by Kenya Ladies Golf Union (KLGU) chairperson, Jane Babsa Nzibo.
The team departed for Morocco on Tuesday.
Speaking to Golf Score Kenya, Team Captain Wafula expressed her pride in leading the team.
“I am deeply honoured to represent and captain Team Kenya at the All Africa Challenge Trophy. This prestigious event offers a unique platform to showcase our talent while fostering unity and friendship among nations through golf. We are determined to give our best and make Kenya proud,” she said.
Team Kenya is outfitted by local fashion brand Vivo, which has generously provided their golf attire.
Kenya has previously hosted the AACT twice, in 1994 and 2014, both at Muthaiga Golf Club in Nairobi.
South Africa are the defending champions and have won the event 14 times.
