Michael Alunga from Uganda Golf Club emerged victorious on Sunday at the 102nd NCBA Kenya Amateur Matchplay Championship.
Held at the prestigious Windsor Golf and Country Club, the event witnessed intense competition as Alunga edged out his fellow countryman, Joseph Cwinyaai, in a nail-biting final match.
The four-day tournament attracted 78 golfers from Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, the UK, India, and South Africa.
The championship followed a rigorous format, beginning with stroke play on day one over 36 holes.
Participants battled fiercely for spots in the subsequent match play rounds.
Out of the 78 players, only 32 advanced to the second round on Friday. Another round of intense competition on the same day saw 16 more players eliminated.
By Saturday, the field had been whittled down to just four semifinalists: Michael Karanga of Kiambu Club, Prany Kapur of South Africa, and the Ugandan duo of Joseph Cwinyaai and Michael Alunga.
In the semifinals, the Ugandans prevailed, setting up an all-Ugandan showdown.
Alunga’s steady play and strategic approach saw him triumph over Cwinyaai, securing his place as the champion of this prestigious event.
He secured a direct slot in next year’s Kenya Open.
