The Professional Golfers of Kenya (PGK) have received a timely sponsorship boost from IMG Kenya, one of the country’s leading sports agencies.

IMG Kenya has extended support worth Sh240,000 to PGK to aid the ongoing qualifiers for the 2025 Magical Kenya Open (MKO), scheduled for February 20–23.

The funds will help ease the financial burden on participating professionals, allowing them to focus on their performance.

PGK Chairman John Wangai expressed gratitude for the support, emphasizing the significance of the qualifiers.

“This year, over 50 Kenyan pros are competing for eight slots at the Magical Kenya Open. In the absence of any other organized qualifier, PGK has arranged a 72-hole event at Muthaiga and Sigona Golf Clubs to determine who earns the spots,” said Wangai.

He added, “We are incredibly grateful to IMG Kenya for stepping in to support our pros. This ensures they can concentrate fully on their game without logistical concerns.”

IMG Kenya Limited Managing Director Charles Gacheru commended PGK for its initiative in organizing the tournaments.

“I applaud PGK for taking the lead in arranging these qualifiers with minimal external support. As stakeholders in Kenyan sports, particularly golf, we understand the financial challenges our pros face when preparing for such high-stakes events,” said Gacheru.

“We are delighted to step in at this crucial time, and this engagement marks the beginning of a conversation on building a more sustainable partnership to support our professional golfers.”

Gacheru also highlighted the challenges Kenyan golf professionals face due to the lack of consistent competitive events.

“Since the 2024 Magical Kenya Open, our professionals have had limited opportunities to compete in local pro events. This not only affects their form but also denies them a chance to earn a living from the sport,” he said.

“Our contribution this week is just the start. IMG Kenya is committed to working with PGK to establish a series of regular tournaments that will provide competitive platforms for pros, talented amateurs, and junior golfers.”

The golfers teed off on Tuesday at Muthaiga Golf Club for the first leg of the two-stage qualifier.

The final leg will take place at Sigona Golf Club on January 30 and 31, where they will battle for the eight available slots in this year’s DP World Tour event at Muthaiga Championship Course (February 20–23).
