Constance Achilla claimed her first-ever victory on Saturday at the inaugural East African Ocean Festival Golf Tournament, held at the historic 113-year-old Mombasa Golf Club.
Achilla, playing off a 36 handicap, triumphed over a competitive field of 92 golfers with an impressive 46 Stableford points.
This win marks a significant milestone in Achilla’s four-year golfing journey, which has seen her participate intermittently.
Despite her inconsistent play, she emerged victorious in this tournament, showcasing her steady performance.
“It has been a great day for me. This is my first win in this category, and I’m thrilled with how I played. My approach was simple—one good shot at a time, one hole at a time,” said an elated Achilla.
In the Men’s Category, Mombasa Golf Club Vice Chair Lawrence Odhiambo, playing off a 10 handicap, was declared the winner after a countback with 38 points.
He narrowly edged out Martin Wahome (handicap 10), who finished runner-up with the same score.
Bhavesh Chhabhiya (handicap 25) came third, carding 37 points.
In the Ladies’ Category, Caroline Munyi (handicap 27) topped the leaderboard with 40 points.
Jackline Mutahi (handicap 36) followed closely behind with 39 points, while Petronilah Kalee (handicap 21) secured third place with 37 points.
Pauline Gichara, playing off a 29 handicap, claimed the Best Guest Category title with 29 points.
Jabess Oduor (handicap 26) was the runner-up with 35 points, and Sammy Mulama (handicap -1) placed third with 33 points after a countback.
The success of the inaugural tournament has set the stage for the sport’s inclusion in future editions of the East African Ocean Festival.
Founding Partner Hamisi Mwaguya confirmed that golf will become a permanent fixture in the festival’s annual calendar.
“Next year, we plan to host an even larger golf tournament as part of the East African Ocean Festival,” Mwaguya announced.
