How Kenya’s top golfer Karanga pocketed Sh1.5 million in 18 tourneys

Michael Karanga of Kiambu Golf Club when he was being crowned golfer of the year at Nyali Golf and Country Club on Sunday.

In a thrilling conclusion to the Kenya Amateur Golf Championship series on Sunday, Michael Karanga of Kiambu Golf Club was crowned golfer of the year.

The year-long series, consisting of 25 events, showcased some of the finest golfing talents in the country.

Karanga’s journey to the top of the leaderboard was nothing short of extraordinary.  With a flawless handicap of 0.0, he participated in 18 events and won in 13, amassing a staggering 1,213 points to secure the top position.

His dominance on the golf course was evident in his remarkable win rate and the impressive amount of money he amassed throughout the series.

With a staggering total of over Sh1,562,117 in prize money, he claimed the title and solidified his reputation as one of Kenya’s premier golfers.

The battle for supremacy was fierce, with John Lejirma of Kenya Railway Golf Club and Godfrey Nsubuga of Uganda Golf Club securing the second and third positions, respectively.

Lejirma, with a handicap of 0.0, accumulated 632 points across 23 events and took home a commendable Sh987,309.

Nsubuga from Uganda’s Mehta Golf Club, also with a handicap of 0.0, earned 604 points from 18 events and received a total of Sh805,717 as prize money from the games in which he participated.

Elvis Muigua of Kiambu Golf Club, who participated in 21 games and Ebill Omollo of Vetlab Sports Club, who participated in 24 games, were ranked at fourth and fifth positions, respectively, both amassing 348 points.

Omollo took home Sh605,603, and Muigai pocketed Sh425,705.

Other top performers in the KAGC series were Dennis Maara of Limuru Country Club, Adel Balala of Vipingo Ridge Golf Resort, and Sammy Mulama of Mombasa Golf Club.

Maara was ranked sixth with 318 points from 15 events and he pocketed a total of Sh371,908, and at position seven was Balala with 278 points from eight events and he took home Sh287,400, whereas Mulalma was in position eight with 271 points from 24 games, received Sh409,013.

Josphat Rono of Golf Park Golf Club, with 265 points, ranked at position nine and received a total of Sh441,783 from 23 events participated in, and to close the chapter for top 10 golfers was Taimur Malik of Muthaiga Golf Club with 212 points and received Sh243, 468 from five golfing events.
