Kenya’s accomplished lady golfer, Naomi Wafula, etched her name in history at the Kiambu Open after beating Uganda’s Godfrey Nsubuga in a riveting battle for the Kenya Amateur Golf Championship (KAGC) series title.

The 25-year-old lady golfer won in the intense competition that concluded with a thrilling playoff between Wafula and Nsubuga after both finished with a two-under-par total of 214 gross at the end of regulation play.

The playoff, which commenced with a four-hole tiebreaker, eventually led to a sudden death playoff at the 18th hole.

After an initial tie in the first three plays, Wafula demonstrated her prowess by paring the fourth hole against Nsubuga’s bogey, securing her place in history as the first female golfer to claim the top cash prize of Sh96,000 in the Kenya Amateur Golf Championship (KAGC) series.

It’s noteworthy that the KAGC series traditionally caters to men, and as a result, the Uganda Amateur Champion Nsubuga was awarded the Kiambu Open trophy, along with 88 points in the KAGC series order of merit.

Nsubuga also took home a cash prize of Sh57,600.

Wafula acknowledged the Kenya Golf Union (KGU) for allowing female golfers to participate alongside their male counterparts in the KAGC series.

This inclusive approach, she noted, not only provides a platform for female golfers to compete for substantial cash prizes but also contributes to elevating their world amateur rankings.

In February this year, Wafula became the first Kenyan to accomplish the feat of making the cut at a Ladies European Tour event that is usually held at the Vipingo Ridge, Africa’s only PGA- branded golf course.
