Major (Rtd) Peter Waweru clinched victory at the 19th qualifying leg of the 2024 NCBA Golf Series, held on Saturday at the picturesque Nanyuki Sports Club.
Waweru delivered a stellar performance, carding 35 points to secure the top prize.
Playing off a handicap of 5, Waweru navigated a competitive field to emerge victorious.
He edged out Moses Muthoki, who also scored 35 points and claimed the runner-up spot in the Division One category.
Reflecting on his achievement, Waweru expressed his excitement about advancing to the grand finale scheduled for November 29, 2024, at Muthaiga Golf Club.
“I’m thrilled to have qualified for the NCBA Golf Series grand finale. The competition was tough, but my hard work has paid off,” Waweru remarked.
“I’m eager to compete with the best and give it my all in November. This opportunity means a lot to me, and I’m looking forward to what lies ahead.”
In Division Two (Handicap 13 to 24), Stephen Mutethia stood out with an impressive 37 points.
For the ladies, Purity Githui led her category with 35 points.
Ian Kirimi emerged victorious in Division Three (Handicap 25 and above) with a score of 35 points.
In the guest category, Chris Njuguna was the standout with 37 points, while Samuel Mwangi excelled in the staff category with an impressive 43 points.
Joseph (Jnr) Warui secured the junior prize with a score of 34 points.
This was the first NCBA series event at Nanyuki Golf Club since 2021, attracting around 120 golfers vying for a spot in the grand finale.
The NCBA Golf Series, which commenced in March this year, has become one of Kenya’s premier golfing events, drawing over 2,000 golfers from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda.
NCBA Group Director of Retail Banking, Tirus Mwithiga, expressed enthusiasm about returning to Nanyuki after a two-year break.
“The beauty and challenge of this venue are exceptional, and we hope to make Nanyuki Sports Club a regular feature in our series. This region offers so much, and we’re excited to continue growing together,” Mwithiga said.
He also praised the high level of skill, determination, and sportsmanship displayed by the participants.
As part of the NCBA Change the Story Initiative, the bank donated and planted over 100 indigenous trees at Nanyuki Sports Club to support environmental conservation and enhance the club’s green spaces.
The next event in the series will be held at Royal Nairobi Golf Club on September 28, 2024.
